| The Rainier Chamber
Winds is one of the few professional ensembles of its kind in the United States.
Founded in 1990 by its conductor Kathleen Macferran,
its purpose is to provide the public with an opportunity to hear a rich
but seldom-performed repertoire -- compositions for chamber wind ensemble
from the Baroque through Modern periods. Unique and challenging
literature, as well as a high expectation for excellence, attracts many of
the finest wind players in the Puget Sound area to the ensemble.
Rainier Chamber Winds concerts combine music with other
arts Children's Concerts Performances feature original compositions, telling stories with narration and mime. Children sit close to the performers, learn about the wind instruments, and talk about the stories and the music. They interact with hand gestures and physically respond to what they hear. Commissions Rainier Chamber Winds has over twelve premieres to its credit, including commissioned works by leading Seattle-area composers such as Ken Benshoof, Huntley Beyer, Roupen Shakarian and Adam Stern. Last year we presented a premiere work for organ solo and winds by composer Chen Yi, commissioned by the American Guild of Organists. Critical Raves |
